Why? Well I don´t know, its close to Buenos Aires, just a short boat ride and I was there!
Montevideo was my first stop and it was lovely - lots of the old colonial buildings again, but more run down, or more colourfully painted, or left next to trendy mirrow-windowed new buildings, so I liked, and nice to be by the sea again. A much more chilled out and laid back city than BA! I headed to Punta del Este for the beach, with the intention of heading further east after a day or so, but I ended up not leaving for the next 4 days, as it was so lovely there. Very windy, but warm and sunny, and the hostel was well good! 10 of us hired mopeds one day and drove out to another beach further away - all deserted and
very windy and cold - and the rest of the time it was beach all day and parties every night, with the poor neighbour, who very consistently complained about the noise every night around 11pm, then at 12, 1am...etc think he gave up around 2am - must be pretty crap living next door to a youth hostel.
