Finally in Bangkok, after having avoided it on first arriving in Thailand, as I was scared - the only thing people told me about it was, "be careful of this scam" "Be careful of that scam" "Don't do this" "Don't stay there" blah blah. I don't know why I listen to people, I really don't, coz this is tame man. For a start, its so much quieter than I envisioned. Not much hassle from shop-keepers at all, in fact, I've got that one nailed anyway. The best thing to say, when they ask you the inevitable primer question, "Hey, where you from?", is not "England". No matter how much you smile when you say it, always, their face drops and you see the thought bubble over the head, "Another effing English". So the other day, in answer to another potentially annoying tailor tout asking "where you fwom?, I replied, "Brazil". Wow the response was too much! "BRAZIL! Wow!, Where in Brazil, where does Ronaldo come from? What's the weather like? How many people in Rio?" It was much fun making up all my little white lies (well, I have been there, so I must have come from there too!).
Walked down the famous Khao San Road today, seen lots of backpackers...I'm sorry, I know I am one myself, but I hate other backpackers. Especially when:
a) they have those disgusting tatty dreadlocks
b) they all have the same-same old tattoos
c) they're all just rude to shop touts - at least have some banter with them you miserable geeks!
I mean I don't really hate them all, just most of them, in certain places, and with the above copycat look and attitude - yeh heavy man, where's the tofu....!!!!
Booked the ticket to Siem Reap tomorrow (base for Angkor Wat in Cambodia). Think I have been ripped off already - silly me - I read the warning advice after buying the ticket and paying for my visa...apparently its scam central the trip from Bangkok to Siem Reap....so may be a lot of fun tomorrow....meaning, NOT.
